Yesterday was Independence Day. Throughout my life this was, to me, always the easiest to recognize and celebrate. Yes, it suffered from what seemed to be endless commercialization but it was still great to see fireworks, enjoy a parade, and be together with friends, family, and neighbors overindulging in food and drink.
The USA with all its faults (and there are many) steadily, too fast for conservatives and too slow for liberals, move along the path of progress. We can debate when the divisiveness started but we cannot debate the result: Trump.
Trump broke America and all that it stands for. The republic. Representative democracy, The rule of law. The American Dream. And American idealism. Trump and his enablers steered America off the path of progress and onto a dystopian one. Upon reflection, we, the people, have little choice other than to pick up mantle of American idealism and join the resistance - a mass movement in the struggle to reclaim our nation in the name of self-government and justice for all.
We, the people, must not let a wannabe king and his corrupt, cruel, tyrannical enablers and sycophants to define who and what we are as a nation. Fun fact: Americans have been fighting the forces of such people and nations throughout our history. Americans of all generations have fought for the American Dream and died for American idealism within our nation and throughout the world.
Dear reader, we find ourselves in at a point in human history, not just American history, where we must rise to meet the moment. History is watching and judging our every move. Even with the Information Age in full swing, we’re quickly finding ourselves on the precipice of a new Dark Age.
The United States will become what we, the people, make it. What we were once is gone and it’s never coming back. A new world order is forming. Our place in this new order has yet to be secured. Will we build a better nation - one that addresses and fixes the systemic problems that plagued the old USA? Or is our hour upon the world’s history stage come to an inglorious end?
A divided, regressive America will not be able to address nuclear proliferation, the resurgence of imperialist empires, state-sponsored terrorism, and climate change, and might even hasten them all. Freedom and democracy require vigilance. It’s not for spectators. Our founding fathers knew it. We forgot it. The time to save the old America was last November. It’s time to start building the USA 2.0.
Where do you stand?
That’s my take. You’re welcome.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
